FMA ficlet: The Written Word

Not a Slut!Ed ficlet.  Just a gen ficlet inspired by me wondering about Ed's reading habits.  Seriously, has anyone seen that boy read just for the hell of it?  *blinks*

The Written Word

Motionless, Edward Elric stood in front of the Central National Library. Two flesh hands grasped two flesh arms. Two flesh feet planted themselves firmly in the sidewalk. And two old, golden eyes stared at the large building in front of him.

He remembered the first time he had held an alchemy book. It had been thick and battered and filled with strange marks. At the time, that had been all that had been needed to incite a young Edward’s curiosity. When he had seen his mother smile at his and Al’s show of alchemy, it had inspired him to pick up another book, then another and another, just to keep his mother smiling.

When a dying Trisha Elric had revealed that their alchemy had reminded her of their bastard of a father, those happy memories had shattered.

The next time Edward had picked up an alchemy book, it had been with his mother’s tombstone clearly in his mind, his words to Al still ringing in his ears:

Let’s bring Mother back.

In his hunger to restore his family, Edward had devoured dozens of books. He had read constantly, to the point where Al told him he had been turning pages in his sleep. The complex formulas and symbols and archaic texts had been mere child’s play to him, and he had treated them as such.

Edward never forgot the feel of his limbs being torn from his body.

Edward never forgot the monstrous creature dying in the middle of the basement floor.

Most importantly, Edward never forgot his most precious person screaming out for him to help, please help, Brother! Help, Brother! as his body disintegrated.

After that, it was more than a year before the blond picked up a book again. Once more, he studied human transmutation, but he mostly focused on the Philosopher’s Stone. That search took him and his brother through countless towns, endless danger, and many unsuspecting lives.

In the end, Edward had succeeded in his quest. His beloved brother was whole, he need not ever suffer again from the pain of automail, and Edward had openly cheered when Winry had congratulated a blushing Alphonse with a kiss.

He just wished he could clean the blood from his hands . . . Hughes’ face from his mind.

He had never gotten the chance . . . to say . . . "thanks."

Edward bit his lip, staring at the towering building. State alchemists unassumingly walked in and out of its doors, most of them never realizing the power that rested in their hands. Not just power over one’s own life but power over hundreds, if not thousands, of lives. Power too easy to abuse, misunderstand, and underestimate.

Edward licked his bruised lips. Several people were beginning to give him odd looks. He barely noticed.

He couldn’t remember the last time he had ever read for the love of reading. He always concentrated on the destination. His mother’s happiness. His mother’s life. His brother’s restoration. Did he ever pick up a book and lose himself in the pleasure of its pages? Or were books just more tools, no more special than a hammer or nails?

"Hey, Boss." Edward stiffened, then relaxed as he recognized Jean Havoc’s voice. "Are you just going to stand there all day?"

He heard the worry in the man’s voice, and he turned to smile at the blond man. Those warm, concerned eyes never left his face. Edward’s smile became a little realer.

Of course . . . without books . . . without the journey of getting to the front flap to the back. . . .

"Nah," he dismissed, flashing Havoc a fanged grin. "I have a couple books Al loaned me at home. They’re fiction, but he says they’re pretty good."

Havoc smiled back, the move jangling the cigarette in his lips. "Want me to drive you, Boss?"

He couldn’t help it; Edward chuckled. "Sure. Mind taking the scenic route, though? Want to see how that new damned Fuhrer wrecked the place since his ascendence."

Warm fuzzies, this gave me warm fuzzies =) Ocassionally we must be reminded what FMA is all about =) Thanks Tir

but really truly OMFGTHNXFORTHELINGEDROYKTHXBAI...*flop*

*snickers* I'm just happy I got someone into that pairing. Y'know, the reason I wrote the original ficlet was because I had never seen that pairing before.

wait.. you mean FMA ISNT all about hot smex between uncanonical pairings?!

;)

heh, I like this. It's an interesting character study. Yeah, good stuff. And I liked the last line too.

I've had that in my notebook for days. . . .

Actually, you know what? This WAS a nice take on Ed's obsession with books - you rarely do see him read anything other than textbooks, so you do wonder if he DOES read for fun, after all. O.o Hunh. *recs on LJ!*

*shrugs helplessly* I noticed that, and then I noticed how many fics had him as an avid reader after the series and such. . . . It . . . I don know . . . bothered me.

I don't know. I really think he enjoys reading, although I couldn't make a judgment on fiction verses nonfiction. But based on his behavior when he first came to Central -- displayed great excitement on seeing Tucker's book collection, went off in the middle of the conversation to start reading, and was reluctant to stop all winter except for occasional snow fights -- he certainly enjoyed reading at that time. Not that time couldn't have soured him on it. :)

Hmm. Forgot about that. ^^'''' Has anyone ever seen him read something that didn't somehow deal with his quest? *blinks*

Nice; and an interesting point is raised. I really can't see Ed reading fiction; he seems too focused on the science, the facts and truth of now, and of course he does always focus on the goal, like you said. Fiction, or even just reading something for the fun of it, really isn't Ed. And I think he's been burned by reality too many times to believe, if only for a little while, in fantasy. =/

Nicely done. =)

Everything else about the boy is complex: Why not his reading habits?
Thanks. ^_^

This is wooonderffulllll! ^_^

"Everything else about the boy is complex: Why not his reading habits?"

haha, i love that. i haven't seen all the anime or read past the US released manga, but Ed's studying habits are intriguing to me. I work as a private tutor, so I see a lot of different types of intelligence (or lack thereof, haha) and I have definitely seen Ed's type before: fiercely smart, with a "my tutor can't POSSIBLY know more than me" attitude. kids who will stubbornly ignore you until they want help, and even then, the help they want is of a "using ppl as tools" sort, like "what does _____ mean?" to save them dictionary search time, unless they're REALLY stumped, and then they want your complete attention and a ten minute interactive lecture right now. lmao.

anyway, my point is that those types of kids have such terrible ADD and usually take a hands-on approach to learning and more often than not hate sitting still to read. so when i saw the shou tucker episode, i was totally surprised that ed *devoured* books with rapture. and then i had this "Ed loves to read" spin in my mind, which seemed odd but really, it seems more congruous with his personality the more I thought about it. yes, he's a little spaz with tons of energy and he's soo stuborn and he doesn't trust adults or other ppls opinions too easily (a la russel's research notes) but then he has that really serious (totally unrealistic for a 12-16 year old XD) mature beyond his years side that really brings it all together. Like when Al said he'd go on a killing rampage like Scar if someone took Ed from him and Ed straight was all like NO. There is no point in revenge. There is no equivilant exchange for a life. I mean, ouch! Talk about a hard lesson to learn first hand...Oo.

so yeah. i liked your story. it nade me think about Ed's reading habits once more. my opinion is that he must, on some level, actually enjoy reading, b/c being a tutor has taught me you just can't force kids to read, dire consequences be damned. lol.

Mmkay, well now that im done noveling you, would you please please please please go check out my live journal? ::shyly:: i just made it. There's a smutty pix! ::pimp::pimp:: gots to pimp my pix... well ^^;; anyway, i think you're really cool and stuff and i dont want to be a lurker anymore...

ooh, ::challange::challenge::challenge:: think you could do a believable noncon Furher Bradley x Armor!Al?? lmao. if i had money, i would PAY to see that...

love, xpyne

lol Well, due to the death of my laptop, I'm having problems with any real reading/writing. I'm currently typing on my parents' computer, actually. ^_~ Due to that, most challenges are being delayed (tho definitely noted ^_^). Hopefully, however, my sister's computer will be nice and let me check out your lj tonight.
Thanks for that *points upwards*. I love different perspectives on Ed, esp. concerning his reading habits. And it seems you have an excellent point of view on the whole thing.

*pwned*

WhooooooAAAAAA.

Great great stuff!

An interesting concept, great take on Ed, and so damn well written! *in awe*

Great stuff! You really are one of the best 'fic writers in the fandom! :)

*should say more but is actually speechless with the good at the moment*

Thank you! Ed's always a fun character to write.
lol I'll never say that. Otherwise, I would be writing more than ficlets. ^_~
